Western Union Telegraph (WUT) pole tag - front view Western Union Telegraph (WUT) pole tag - back view

Material: Metal (aluminum)

Size: 2 inch height; 3 inch width

Year: 1856-1964

Usage: nailed to wood telegraph poles to identify the company which owns them

These were used to mark the poles owned by Western Union Telegraph (WUT). Western Union's History page says the company's name was first changed to The Western Union Telegraph Company in 1856. They apparently stopped constructing new poles around 1964 when their radio/microwave transmission systems began to replace their land lines. Thus I assume this tag is from somewhere within that timeframe.

Marking: W U T

Acquired: July 20, 2004 - gift from Pat S.

Notes: retrieved from a pole that had been replaced along a CSX Transportation railroad line in the east St. Louis, Missouri area
